So God created man in His own image … male and
female He created them (Genesis 1:27).
You are part of God’s wonderful creation agenda; you are God’s master piece, you are not a biological accident, not an afterthought and certainly not a mistake at all. When God created both the male and the female, He created them in His image by a deliberate creative act. His creation was not complete until a woman entered the Garden of Eden. God didn’t create you “hoping for a boy”! It is unfortunate that sometimes, circumstances surrounding the woman or the dictates of our cultural settings make the idea of being a woman difficult, dangerous and even painful; that was never God’s plan for the woman.
Despite repeated resolutions from the United Nations and more particularly the United Nation Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women, often called the “International Bill of Rights for Women”, the woman has continued to be misunderstood, misinterpreted, manipulated and maltreated in many societies due to ignorance of her worth and the treasures God has put in her. Unfortunately, many women today, not aware of the treasures God has endowed them with and the place of Honour God designed for the woman in the universe easily fall prey to the enemy who continues to devalue them.
So what does it mean to be created in God’s image? What is this image of God in which the woman was created? It is his moral likeness we reflect; our character and behavior were designed to be an exact representation and reflection of the character and behavior of God, mirroring a family resemblance of Him. This does not pertain to the physical nature but rather to the spiritual and moral nature. How are we like God in image and likeness?
Firstly, we are capable of communicating and relating, we long for relationship and fellowship; we experience emotions and feeling, we have a yearning for God and pursue Him. God intends that the man and the woman though similar, yet different beings should become a unified whole just as the different persons of the Trinity form one unified God. At the centre of the God head is relationship and it was only as Adam responded to Eve -the woman God brought to him that he began to reflect God’s relational image as revealed in Scripture.
Secondly, we reflect God’s image not only through ‘Relationship’; but through ‘Rulership’. Adam and Eve were given all creation (except the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil) and were told to rule over the earth and take care of it. The woman, just like the man, was created with creative powers.
Thirdly, we reflect God’s image by being able to discern between right and wrong. Fourthly, we act and are responsible for our actions. Even though the fall of man distorted God’s image in both the male and female, it did not eradicate the image of God. Through Christ, the image of God is restored back into focus, so that God’s glory shines through us from the reflection.
