Keep me as the Apple of the eye … (Psalm 17:8).

“You are the apple of my eye,” is usually a familiar line, even a cliché; but what many people do not know is that it is a phrase that speaks not just of human love, but of the  love of God that can heal our deepest hurts and fulfill our deepest longings.  What does the phrase then really mean?

The “apple” of the eye refers to the pupil of the eye. The apple was most probably used for this description because it was one of the most common sphere-shaped object around in Bible times (and even now).  Also, the central opening of the eye, the dark centre, is referred to as the apple.  The apple or pupil of the eye is the gateway through which visible light passes and is converted by the brain into three dimensional images.  Both Hebrews and Latin translation of the word pupil or apple actually means little, thus it refers to the fact that you can see a tiny reflection of yourself in the eye of any one beholding you in that pupil.  When you are the apple or the pupil of my eye, you are close to me in more ways than just one.

Consequently, to be ‘the apple of someone’s eye’ is to be cherished by that person above all others, just the way a mother cherishes, deeply values and maintains eye to eye and face to face contact with her new born baby.  A mother’s love for her child reflects God’s love for the woman. God who created the woman loves her amazingly, even far more than a loving mother can love  her baby.  The woman is the apple of God’s eye.  We are His beloved.

The amazing reality behind this imagery is that figuratively speaking, when the woman looks into God’s eye, she can see all the vast evidence of God’s unfailing and unending love for her.  Every page of the Bible unveils this undeniable truth.  God’s love for the woman is incomparable to no other love that the world has ever seen, heard of or known.  Because the woman is the apple of God’s eye, He not only loves, cherishes and values her, He has great plans for her as His peculiar treasure.  Because we are the apple of His eye, He cares and is always with us every step of the way we go in our life’s endeavours and pursuits.

All too often, many women only focus on the negatives in their lives, many often seem to focus only on the chaos and disasters they experience everyday of their lives.  It is in times of uncertainty such as have been mentioned that the need to always remember this very one important and crucial truth becomes very necessary; you are the apple of God’s eye!  He loves you so dearly irrespective of your past or present circumstance, He loves and cares so much about you no matter your insecurities and inadequacies.  He only wants the best for you.  He offers to be your soul’s rock, refuge  and foundation of every success you could ever imagine for yourself.  Because you are the apple of God’s eye, you also need to demonstrate to Him that you love him by obeying His words and keeping His commandments.

Prayer Focus:            Thank you Lord that I am loved, valued and cared for by you as the apple of the eye.  Help me to always be conscious of this truth in Jesus Name.

Quotes:                       An apple in God’s eye, to Him I am a treasure, He loves me with a love that cannot be measured.  An apple in God’s eye, precious in His sight, more valuable than gold, much to my delight.
