TEXT: Thus says the Lord , let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understands and knows me….(Jeremiah 9:23 – 24)
There are many people in the world who seek after knowledge of many things. Many in the church too, seem consumed with the search for knowledge of many things, collecting many volumes and pouring over them, searching for some new tidbits of Imformation about every other mundane things. But what we must always remember is that while striving for knowledge for the sake of acquiring knowledge is good, we need rather to chose to strive to know God more, because the knowledge of God is what will make us free in every aspect of life. Thus to experience true freedom, you can not down play the issue of knowing God.
What does it mean to know God? Webster New International Dictionary of the English Language(second Edition) defines knowledge as ” familiarity gained by actual experience; technical acquaintance; as the knowledge of life”
Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary calls it ” the fact or condition of knowing something or someone with familiarity gained through experience or association. In other words, knowledge simply means having a relationship with someone or something. So for the purposes of our lesson today, having knowledge of God actually means having a relationship with Him, not just having a mental accent about Him.
There are a few scriptures that upon consideration can clarify and bring out the meaning of KNOWLEDGE for better understanding. They are as follow:
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge….”
“And this is life eternal, that they might know the the only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou has sent”
In both passages, you will notice that the word KNOWLEDGE AND KNOW is referring to a relationship, not just a mental accent about God. God’s people are destroyed for lack of a working relationship with Him. Jesus also speaking in John 17: 3 further stated that eternal life is knowing the father, meaning, eternal life is having a functional relationship with the father.
Seeking knowledge in various disciplines and fields of endeavour is good, but a relationship dimension of knowledge about God should be our greatest daily life’s pursuit in order to experience the freedom that only the knowledge of God can bring. It is my prayer that the almighty God will help you to know God truly and not just be a mere nominal church goer in Jesus name.
